Introduction

I'm often approached by friends and family who are curious about how I got into the field of I.T. After working in I.T. for 22 years, I consider myself a Cybersecurity professional. However, the path to getting into I.T. is not a straightforward one, as everyone takes a different journey. In this blog post, I hope to provide useful information that can help you get started in the I.T. field. I will debunk some myths that might discourage you from pursuing a career in I.T., and I will also discuss the various reasons why someone might choose to transition into this field.

This blog post is part one of two in the How Do I Get into the I.T. Field series. You can also check out my YouTube video discussing the same topic (https://youtu.be/QfC9YPreb88). Myths about getting into I.T.

There are several myths surrounding the process of breaking into the I.T. field, which can be discouraging for aspiring I.T. professionals. It is essential to conduct thorough research to separate fact from fiction. As someone with experience and knowledge in the field, I created the website Cyb3r-S3c to offer guidance and assistance to those seeking to pursue a career in I.T. While I may not consider myself an expert, I am sharing the information based on my experience and extensive research, with the intention of helping people who share a passion for technology to break into the field. My ultimate goal is to help demystify the process of getting into the I.T. industry and provide practical steps that can help individuals achieve their goals.

  • Myth 1 - You Need a Four Year Degree: One common myth that I often come across is the belief that a four-year degree is necessary to secure a job in the I.T. field. However, this is far from the truth. For instance, as a principal security engineer, I don't have a four-year degree, and my experience demonstrates that it is not mandatory. While having a degree or certification may increase your chances of getting hired, they are not essential requirements for breaking into the I.T. industry. Instead, hard work, dedication, and perseverance are crucial for individuals who do not have a degree to advance in their careers. Although HR may prefer candidates with a degree, it does not necessarily mean that those without one cannot advance in their careers. Ultimately, it is essential to prioritize gaining relevant skills, knowledge, and experience, as these are the key factors that will help you succeed in the I.T. field.

  • Myth 2 - College Classes are Required to Learn I.T.: Another prevalent myth is the belief that the only way to learn about I.T. is by taking college classes. However, this is a misconception. There are numerous ways to gain knowledge and develop I.T. skills, and it's essential to find a method that suits your learning style and budget. Options include taking college courses, attending boot camps, reading I.T. books, working on personal lab projects, volunteering, and more. By integrating various learning methods into your routine, you can accelerate your learning and improve your skills faster. Ultimately, the key is to remain open-minded and flexible about the various learning opportunities available to you and to take advantage of those that work best for you.

  • Myth 3 - Must Know How to Code: Another common myth about the I.T. field is the misconception that coding is a requirement. However, this is not necessarily true. While coding can be beneficial in some I.T. roles, it is not a mandatory skill. The I.T. industry is vast, and there are numerous paths that one can take to establish a career. Not all I.T. roles require coding skills, and there are several areas within the field that don't demand this particular skill set. Therefore, it is essential to understand that there are numerous opportunities within the I.T. industry that do not require coding, and aspiring I.T. professionals should consider exploring the various roles available to them to find one that aligns with their interests and skill sets.

  • Myth 4 - I.T. is for Young People: Another myth that some people may believe is that I.T. jobs are only for young people. However, this is far from the truth. In the I.T. industry, professionals of all ages can be found at every level, from entry-level to executive positions. The I.T. field is not age-restricted, and success in this industry is based on an individual's ability and willingness to work hard, learn continuously, and improve their skills. Therefore, it's essential to recognize that age is not a limiting factor when pursuing a career in IT, and individuals of any age can find success in this industry if they are willing to put in the effort and dedication required to advance their careers.

  • Myth 5 - Your skills Wont Transfer to I.T.: Another myth that some people may believe is that I.T. jobs are only for young people.

  • Mtyh 6 - It Takes Years to Learn the Necessary I.T. Skills: Another myth that some people may believe is that It takes years to learn the necessary skills to work in I.T. This is far from the truth. While some roles may require more specialized skills or experience, many entry-level roles in I.T. can be obtained with a relatively short amount of training or education. The key to success in the I.T. field is to have clear goals and a solid plan for achieving them. By identifying the skills and knowledge needed for the role you are interested in, you can focus your efforts on learning the specific skills required. Additionally, it's important to leverage all available resources to aid in your learning, such as online courses, tutorials, or mentorship programs. Another important factor to consider is how your existing skills and experience can be applied to the I.T.. field. Finally, it's important to be proactive in your learning and seek assistance when needed. Don't be afraid to ask for help or guidance from experienced colleagues or seek out mentorship opportunities to accelerate your learning and career growth.
